River processes and features:
The river Lym is ideal to study river processes and features. It is a short walk from the Field Study Centre and easily accessible for most of its length.
Coastal processes and features:
Lyme Regis is a prime area in which to study and observe the processes that shape our coast. A new £21m coastal protection scheme is now in its 5th phase and has been designed to retain Lyme regis' unique harbour structure - the Cobb. The Cobb is the oldest working breakwater of its type in the country.
A bus may be hired to visit the classic textbook sites further down the Jurassic Coast at Lulworth Cove, Durdle Door and Chesil beach.
Lithoseral succession:
Chesil Beach is also an excellent place to demonstrate standard techniques in investigating beach structure.
Tourism:
Investigate the effects of tourism on Lyme Regis – a small rural town whose population vastly increases each summer. The town's economy relies heavily on tourists who are attracted by its beaches, spectacular coastal scenery and the unique harbour structure, the Cobb.
